Morenike Coker

Pro Media Mag : First of all tell us about the start of your professional career?
Morenike Coker : I’ve had so many professional careers law, music industry, travel, teaching, insurance and the list goes on. There are two careers I understand, that which is expected of me and that which I am. Leaving law school and following my own path was the start of my professional career as well as the beginning of the understanding that humans are not made to work 8 hour jobs. Many people influenced my thinking including Buddha and Napoleon Hill.

Pro Media Mag : What was the motive behind traveling around the world?
Morenike Coker : I was fed up with life riding on people who weren’t happy’s coat tails. “Morenike has a job, an apartment, and bought a BMW”. I lost all physical possessions and gained my freedom. The second I found someone to take over my lease, I called my mother to send my passport. I was in Phoenix, Arizona at the time and the closest border was Mexico. I had made friends who came from Mexico and I loved the people. My trip to Asia over 19 months was incredible because I missed the collective society of Latin America. My professional career began at a young age when I knew that I was holding a different mentality than what was inherited and taught.

Pro Media Mag : Who or what inspired you to get into writing?
Morenike Coker : I left to find out how I can best express myself and I just started writing. Funny enough, it started with a very steamy encounter and the book fleshed itself out from there. As a child though, I moved so much because my parents worked in higher education. Stability was not in people but in creativity and books that became my friends.

Pro Media Mag : Tell us about your debut book “Something to Show For It”?
Morenike Coker : Its my middle finger to the world of people who told me I couldn’t. I left law school after a series of life traumas or awakenings and I paved my own way traveling throughout the course of 10 months in two countries- Guatemala and Mexico. The kicker is that in the midst of homelessness and pain, I took a leap towards a life that showed me my inner power and the God in everyone.

Pro Media Mag : Who are you target readers?
Morenike Coker : I was writing this initially for myself and then it became a book travelers love. Then it grew to people who always wanted to pack up and live a life true to themselves. Some readers have been picking it up when they find themselves in a crossroads in life- a divorce, retirement, leaving a job of 10 years, graduating and asking themselves ‘what next’? It’s grown into a book for every soul.

Pro Media Mag : What kind of response you have received from the release?
Morenike Coker : Mostly powerful. Some share my writing is very raw and real. All have shared that it serves as a mirror and have had to put it down in the spots where they still had personal work to do. The most beautiful response is that they are themselves there.

Pro Media Mag : What’s the best part of being a writer?
Morenike Coker : Well, I tend to shy away from this label. I wrote this book after leaving law school before my second year and the identity crisis I had was so painful and directly related to how we place value on what we do verses who we are. I was in pain daily asking myself, if I’m not a lawyer or student, who am I?
In Mexico, I understood the toxicity of this when I met many retirees drinking to a stupor almost daily because of this uncertainty of forgetting that we are consciousness, everything and nothing. I learned that if I don’t write, I still exist.
Doing whatever I can to learn, share, exercise my free speech, and grow. Ultimately, being myself and speaking my heart and mind are the best parts of expressing consciousness.

Pro Media Mag : Have you set some goals to achieve?
Morenike Coker : Serving others is my main goal.

Pro Media Mag : While going through your site we came across a product ‘Clavicle support’. Can you tell us more about that?
Morenike Coker : This is a product I sell to assist other people with ‘support’. Posture is huge in traveling, exercise, and daily life. This can help others in backpacking and digital nomading.

Pro Media Mag : Are you working on any new project?
Morenike Coker : Currently, this interview is my current project as well as taking each moment as it comes.
