Clogged pores? Frequent breakouts? If your skin has gone haywire, don’t blame it on the alcohol, but your beauty blender. It’s no secret the first rule to flawless, clear skin is to protect your canvas from acne-causing culprits – aka- makeup brushes and beauty blenders. Labeling these miniature sponges of joy as bacteria-infested just might be an understatement. Don’t believe us, we sliced our freshly washed beauty blender in half and tested it ourselves. What we found was astonishing.

Despite being “clean”, our beauty blender still had a serious amount of foundation residue lurking behind the scenes. Just imagine the invisible bacteria not easily detected by the eye! Oh, and when’s there’s bacteria, our dear friend, Mr. Mold, typically follows. As you’d expect, mold and bacteria leads to skin problems not always easily concealed with makeup: whiteheads, blackheads, nodules, and cystic acne. You name it. They all want in on the action.

TIP: Never store a damp beauty blender in a closed makeup bag without access to sunlight and air – take these two things away and you have a prime environment for bacteria!

Just like any cosmetic product, replacement is key. On average, the beauty blender has a lifespan of about three months before it starts to fray and tear apart, making it an open invitation for bacteria.

So, if you’re wondering how to clean your beauty blender, here’s what we suggest:

Soak it. Submerge your beauty blender in a cleaning solution to loosen up any of the foundation that’s made its way inside – then squeeze the sponge a few times to absorb and squish the cleanser deeper into the beauty blender. Rinse thoroughly in water and then set out to air dry on a clean surface that has good air circulation.

Wash your beauty blender after each use. Yes, in order to keep bacteria from dominating your sponge (and your face), your beauty blender has to be cleaned after each use, or at a minimum of once a week. Another brag-worthy do-it-yourself beauty technique is to soak your beauty blender in a gentle anti-bacterial dish soap or baby shampoo that will help to kill bacteria and break down emollients often found in cosmetic products. Last but not least, soaking your beauty blender in natural salt water may also keep bacterial invaders at bay. Sea salt is a gentle detoxifier with antiseptic and disinfectant properties – both essential for reducing bacterial growth.

Call for backup. If you’d rather not make a career out of washing beauty blenders, buy plenty at a time and always keep a few extras on hand. Then, throw a beauty blender party and wash them all at once.

What’s in it for you? Clean beauty blenders every day, less bacteria, and fewer breakouts. Win-win. In addition to opting for non-comedogenic beauty products, cleaning your beauty blender regularly and adhering to a good skincare ritual will have your skin photo-ready in no time flat.

For natural-looking makeup and flawless skin, a beauty blender can be an amazing asset. Just don’t let it (and its bacteria-loving friends) get together and form a grand skin takeover – since covering up a parade of acne can be a real pain too.
