Marc Marut interview

Pro Media Mag : Our readers would like to know about the start of your career? What brought you in entertainment?
Marc Marut : I actually fell into it by accident. When I was nine years old, I needed ten badges to attend a special Cub Scouts party, but I only had eight. My father worked out a deal that if I auditioned for the role of Gavroche in the musical Les Misérables, it would count towards a troubadour badge. I agreed and did the audition, and to my surprise I got the role! I was one of the original cast members of the first Canadian production of Les Misérables.

Pro Meida Mag : What, in your experience, is the most important quality in
an entertainer?
Marc Marut : I would say charisma. It’s one thing to be able to act a certain way, but a true entertainer should actually be entertaining… the life of the party so to speak. The best entertainers I’ve met are just as much fun in person as they are when they’re doing their job.

Pro Media Mag : What have you learned about yourself since you became a celebrity?
Marc Marut : It’s taught me humility. I’ve had people put me on a pedestal and tell me how honoured they are to meet me, but really I’m just an ordinary guy… I can get a lot of attention, but ultimately I’m no different from anybody else.

Pro Media Mag : Tell us about your recent track “Fuck You COVID-19”
Marc Marut : Like all my music it just popped into my head. I was actually getting ready to record some other stuff I have written, when suddenly this global pandemic came out of nowhere and so did this song! It was such a catchy tune and was so relevant to how people were feeling, I had to put all my other plans on hold and record this one instead. For the music video I asked fans from around the world to send in footage of themselves rocking out to the song, because I wanted to show that despite all the hardships we could all still come together and have fun. People really love it, and I’m grateful I can bring them some joy in these difficult times.

Pro Media Mag : You have starred in feature film “The Paperboy (1994). Tell us about your role and working experience?
Marc Marut : I played Johnny McFarley, a very emotionally damaged neighborhood paperboy, on a mission to get himself a new family by any means necessary! It was an amazing experience, because not only did I get to tap into my inner psycho, but I still get praise for my performance. Working with Alexandra Paul was wonderful, and I don’t think you could ever meet a nicer person than her. I still get a kick out of seeing my mom and brother as extras in a couple of scenes, too.

Pro Media Mag : If you could pick one scene you did, that you could relive again, because it had such an impact on you, which one would it be.
Marc Marut : I think it would be the scene from The Paperboy (1994) where I sip imaginary hot chocolate with Cammie and Tiffany. It just felt so right at the time, and I knew it was coming off great on camera. It was one of those perfect moments, which are so rare.

Pro Media Mag : Singing, songwriting or acting, what’s more interesting ?
Marc Marut : They’re all interesting, that’s why I like combining them. After I wrote and sang “S.O.B. (Song Of a Bitch)”, I wanted the video for it to be more like a short film. It tells a story, and that way I was able to get my acting in there too. I started out in musical theatre after all, which combines singing and acting anyway… now I get to write the music also.

Pro Media Mag : Aside from acting and music, what Is an interesting fact we don’t yet know about you?
Marc Marut : When I was in my 20’s I trained really hard in martial arts, and did pretty well in a number of tournaments. I became proficient in Jiu-Jitsu, Hung Gar Kung Fu, grappling (submission wrestling), and Lapunti Arnis De Abanico. I was in really good shape when I was younger.

Pro Media Mag : Can you share a little about your work on TV as you have
appeared on many TV shows ?
Marc Marut : Sure, I’ve done a lot of TV actually. I was on three seasons of Avonlea as the character Elbert Wertz. I’ve also appeared on such shows as Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Goosebumps, Beyond Reality, My Secret Identity, and three of the TekWar TV movies with William Shatner, just to name a few. I was ten years old when I started doing TV shows, so the list is pretty long.

Pro Media Mag : What’s the best way to follow you online?
Marc Marut : My website is coolass.tv and the best way to keep up to date with me is by joining my  mailing list. I’ve had people tell me they wished they knew to send in footage for my latest video, and I really wish they had known too! If they had been on my mailing list, they would be getting seen on MTV along with the rest of us.
