Rachel Anne Cox talks about her new book A LIGHT FROM THE ASHES

We are sharing our recent interview with author Rachel Anne Cox, whose new book A LIGHT FROM THE ASHES launches in two weeks. It is a dystopian novel.

Pro Media Mag : First of all tell us about the start of your professional career?
Rachel Anne Cox : The Rachel Anne Cox to that Pro Media Mag is not cut and dry per se. I feel like I’ve been writing consistently and on a professional level for several years now, since I finished my first novel back in 2012. However, my debut novel is being released this month, so some would consider that the start of my professional career.

Pro Media Mag : Who or what inspired you to get into writing?
Rachel Anne Cox : It’s hard to say. I’ve been writing and loving writing for as long as I can remember. I think I wrote my first play at the age of eight. Maybe it was Anne’s character from Anne of Green Gables who first got me interested in writing. But I remember the first time I felt like writing was something I was good at or had talent in…that was in my 10th grade English class. In those high school years, I was having a really hard time in my life, and I wasn’t really sure I was good at anything. But my teacher, Mrs. Gibson, or “Gibs” as we affectionately called her, helped me believe in myself and see that I had potential. The first part of the year I had a “C” in the class because I basically wasn’t trying. But by the end of the year, I had an “A” and believed that writing was something I could do.

Pro Media Mag : Tell us more about your upcoming release, a dystopian novel ‘A LIGHT FROM THE ASHES’?
Rachel Anne Cox : It takes place in Virginia, 40 years in the future. There is no internet, not even electricity, and there have been a series of revolutions in the country. My story begins as the children of revolutionaries with limited supplies and no electricity, are about to start a Third Revolution to take down the dictatorship that has taken charge of an America ruined by war and natural disasters. The main character Sam is being thrown into another war, even though he has vowed to never kill again. And the women in his life are leading the small group of revolutionaries known as The Watch.

Pro Media Mag : Who are your target readers?
Rachel Anne Cox : People from their late teens to their 40s, creative, old souls, people who are maybe a little skeptical of the government and where we are heading. Anyone striving for change in the world.

Pro Media Mag : What kind of response your previous projects have received?
Rachel Anne Cox : As this is my debut novel, I am still in the hoping phase…hoping it will be well-received.

Pro Media Mag : It seems you love writing novels. Any plans of writing any fiction, series or any other type of prose?
Rachel Anne Cox : I’ve always written in a variety of genres, from poetry to short stories to novels. I feel like my style works best with a book length project. I have many plans for upcoming books, including a non-fiction historical novel, a prequel to A Light from the Ashes, and a memoir.

Pro Media Mag : What’s the best part of being a writer?
Rachel Anne Cox : The interaction between me and the characters in my books. I feel like they are my friends during the writing process, and it is so fun getting to know them.

Pro Media Mag : Doing anything else apart from writing?
Rachel Anne Cox : I do have a couple of day jobs. I teach college English and do some freelance writing tutoring.

Pro Media Mag : Are you working on any new project?
Rachel Anne Cox : I am. I am about a year into writing a non-fiction historical novel about a secret lesbian actress at the beginning of the 20th century. I’m calling it non-fiction because the story is completely based in fact, and I’m sticking very closely to the true story of her life. But it will be written in the style of a novel rather than a biography.

Pro Media Mag : Are you active on social media? What’s the best way to follow you online?
Rachel Anne Cox : Yes, I am very active on social media.
